A jaw crusher is the primary machine on almost every crushing job: it takes blasted rock, oversize or demolition concrete and reduces it to a size the rest of the plant can handle. What to compare between listings: jaw opening (a 1000 x 650 mm jaw handles very different feed from a 1200 x 750), closed side setting range, whether it has a hydraulic release or overload system, pre-screen and bypass chute arrangement, and whether it is set up for concrete with rebar (magnet fitted, dirt belt).

Sizing a jaw for your job

Match the feed. The largest lump should be no more than about 80% of the jaw opening, or the machine will bridge and you will spend the day rock-breaking. Match the throughput too: a 1000-class jaw closed down to 100 mm will not give you 300 tonnes an hour, no matter what the brochure says. If you are unsure, tell the owner what you are feeding and what you need out — most have run their machine on similar material and will give you a straight answer.

For concrete recycling a jaw on its own is often enough, producing a roadbase that goes straight over a screen. For hard quarry rock you will usually want a cone or impactor behind it — see the other machine types below.

Before you accept a hire

Ask about the jaw dies. Manganese is the biggest consumable on a jaw and a set that is close to its flip or replacement point will eat into your production. Ask what toggle plate is fitted, when the bearings were last checked, and whether the owner supplies a commissioning day. Confirm transport: a tracked jaw needs a float and, above certain dimensions, an oversize permit and pilot in WA.
